How to Make a Mold of Your Face
What do you need
Buckets x 3
Plastic trash bag
First step is to set up your work station.
Lay down a sheet of plastic on the ground and put the chair in the middle if you are going to sit up while making your face mold. Or you could just lay on the floor.
Then put another sheet of plastic on the table where you are going to place everything on. This is just for quick clean up. If you don't mind making your space messy, then skip to the next step.
Second step is to prepare the castee. Cut a hole on the trash bag and put your head through it so your body is protected and use tape to tape the collar to your neck so the alginate does not have chance to run down. Wearing a shower cap will help collect all your lose hair together because alginate will stick to your hair and it is hard to get it off. And put a hair band on to secure it. Then put vaseline on castee's eyebrows and lashes.
Next step. Cut up the plaster strip.Because alginate is so soft, you want to put few layers of plaster strips to hold your soft cast into place. Just cut it up in to rectangular or triangular shapes.
Now is time to prepare the alginate mix.
Depends on the product you get, the water and alginate ratio will vary. But measure out water and alginate in separate bucket and then add half of the water into the dry alginate bucket and start mixing with the rubber spatula very fast. Using warm water will accelerate the setting time, so you should use cold water for the mixture.
Put it on!!
Once it is close to a bread dough consistency, stick it on the castee's face as soon as possible. The castee should put straws in the nose so they can breath while the alginate is setting. It will tend to run to the side but you can just scoop it back on the face. Once it does not move on your face, then it is time to put on the plaster strips.
Dip the plaster strips in a bucket of water and squeeze out the excess water. Then put two layers of plaster strip all over the face. Make sure to get where your chin connect to your neck. That is a hidden spot that is easily omitted.
The plaster strip will heat up and then start to cool down. When it is no longer hot. You can take it off. Now you have the negative cast of your face in alginate.
Then you can pour plaster into the mold to make a plaster positive of your face. If that is what you wanted, then you can stop reading and be happy.
If you want to make negative of your positive plaster face mold. Then you will need to make a one part plaster mold.
You want to gave your plaster face a very good vaseline facial. Because you are making a plaster mold off a plaster prototype. So you need to use vaseline to prevent the plaster from bonding together. Some people like to use oil soap. That works too. But I found that vaseline works very well and you don't have to wait for it to dry. A thin layer will get the job done. Also, almost all the countries have vaseline, so it is one common item that you can find everywhere you go.
Everyone's face is different. So you want to make sure there are no undercut on your face. You want to use clay to fill the nostril and alter other minor undercuts on your face.
