A Domestic Waste Management Unit
'Bukentsu' is a domestic waste management unit designed for flat residents in London in order to facilitate the daily activity of waste separating and recycling at home, as there has been a persisting issue with the overflowing communal waste and recycling collection bins and lack of food composting service. The name came from the Japanese word for classification.
I intend to investigate if waste management behaviour can be ritualized through product design and aim to deliver a product-based design solution.
I unpacked rubbish and recycling bins in various locations in the neighborhood and analyzed their contents to understand the factors that play into waste disposal decisions from the end users, such as location of the bins, the distance between all the bins, clarity of the recycling instructions on the packaging and the availability of food composting options.
